The Green Sanctuary program reflects the Unitarian Universalist Seventh Principle: “to affirm and promote respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.”

The five core focus areas of the Green Sanctuary program are:

  1. Building awareness of societal environmental issues among UUs.
  2. Generating commitment for personal lifestyle changes.
  3. Motivating UUs to community action on environmental issues.
  4. Building a connection between our rituals and ceremonies and environmental consciousness.
  5. Building awareness of and rectifying environmental injustices.

In September, 2005 UUCD was officially recognized as a Green Sanctuary (the first in Minnesota) by the Unitarian Universalist Ministry for Earth (UUME).  The congregation had resolved, in May 2003, to become certified as a Green sanctuary (GS) and charged the Green Sanctuary committee, with Barb Akre as chair, to lead the way.  We developed and demonstrated action in all core focus areas to achieve the goal.

The congregation continues to look to the GS committee for leadership and advice in acting on the focus areas.  Major effort has been directed toward construction of a new “green” building on College Street while continuing to sponsor Adult Enrichment courses and other activities related to the five core focus areas.  David Yount has been serving as chair during the College Street Building phase. Anyone is welcome to join this committee.
