Why am I a Unitarian Universalist

Beginning in the Middle

Journey Inward, Journey Outward

I have been a Unitarian Universalist minister for more than thirty-three years, serving congregations in Vermont, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, and Minnesota.  I was born in Duluth and raised just up the North Shore in Two Harbors.  My parents joined the First Unitarian Church of Duluth in the 1950’s, when it was located on East First Street. Some of my earliest memories are of being bundled up with my brothers in the back seat of the family car, and heading down for Christmas Eve services in the old stone building.   After graduating from high school in 1971, I went east to attend Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, and Harvard Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts (I later received a Doctor of Ministry degree from Meadville-Lombard Theological School, our Unitarian Universalist seminary in Chicago).  After forty years of ‘wandering in the wilderness,’ I returned home to my roots in 2011, when UUCD called me as their settled minister.   I am grateful every day for the privilege of ministering to and with this community of thoughtful, caring, and active people.  I live with my wife, Dianne, on the west central hillside in Duluth, where we enjoy looking out on beautiful Lake Superior, and growing vegetables in our community garden.  I have two grown sons, Matthew and Nathaniel.  I am a storyteller and a story-listener, and I love sitting over a cup of coffee talking about ‘soul matters.’  I hope you enjoy our website, and I look forward to greeting you and welcoming you on Sunday morning!
