UUCD Peace and Justice Committee
The UUCD Peace and Justice Committee uses education, dialogue, and action to defend the inherent dignity of every person, to protect the right of conscience and the use of the democratic process, and to promote peace in our daily lives and in the world.
We maintain an ongoing relationship with other community groups, such as the Northland Anti-War Coalition and the Network of Spiritual Progressives. We share information about local events with the congregation.
The UUCD Peace and Justice Committee works closely with Denominational Affairs to engage UUCD with Congregational Study/Action Issues established by the UUA, such as Peacebuilding and Ethical Eating. We also work with Green Sanctuary on issues of sustainability, Welcoming Congregation on Pride and other GLBT issues, and with CHUM on issues of economic justice as part of the Social Responsibility Council.
The UUCD Peace and Justice Committee works with Adult Enrichment to offer Sunday forums and book discussions. Books discussed recently have included The Left Hand of God by Michael Lerner, The Real Wealth of Nations by Riane Eisler, and Class Matters by Betsy Leondar-Wright. Book discussions for the 2008-09 year will include The Prophetic Imperative by Richard S. Gilbert and The Lucifer Effect by Philip Zumbardo.
Anti-oppression work has included services and community events for International Human Rights Day and Martin Luther King's Birthday.
